The real-life history of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna was very tragic, and her death was confirmed after the discovery of new bodies and DNA testing in 2007. For those who dream of a happier ending for the duchess, there’s Fox Animation Studios’ Anastasia, an animated film that tells of an alternate history where she reunites with her grandma. It was a hit that spawned the stage musical, and it’s currently touring all across the U.S. The performances at the Hollywood Pantages is now over, but in November, it will premiere at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, California.
The stage musical is based on the 1997 animated film that was inspired by rumors where Anastasia was able to escape death. Like the film, the musical follows Anya, who suffers from amnesia and wants to find out who she really is. She is joined by conman Dmitry and ex-aristocrat Vlad as they help her find her identity.
Christy Altomare played Anastasia in the Hartford Stage and Broadway, with Lila Coogans playing Anya in the U.S. Tour. You can check out Coogans’ performance of “Journey to the Past” below.
The Anastasia musical will be held at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on the following dates: November 5- 10 and November 12-17. For tickets, visit https://www.scfta.org/events/2019/anastasia.
