Patty Jenkins signs overall series deal with Netflix

Variety reports that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has officially signed a $10 million multi-year overall deal with Netflix to develop and produce new shows exclusively for the streaming service.

“I’m so excited to embark on a great journey of making the new world of television with a company and group of people I admire as much as Ted, Cindy, Channing, Peter and the team at Netflix,” Jenkins said. “I look forward to digging in to some great work together soon.”

Jenkins first gained recognition through her directorial debut Monster which starred Charlize Theron as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. The biopic received critical acclaimed and resulted in an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for Theron’s performance.

For her work in television, Jenkins had directed episodes of Arrested Development, Entourage, Betrayal, I Am the Night and The Killing with the latter earning her her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Patty Jenkins to Netflix,” Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series Channing Dungey,  said in a statement. “Her trailblazing work has pushed boundaries and she confidently tells stories that leave an unforgettable mark. We look forward to fostering her many ideas and helping them come to life,”

Jenkins is best known for directing 2017’s blockbuster hit Wonder Woman which grossed more than $800 million worldwide. The film’s highly-anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984 will be directed by Jenkins with Gal Gadot set to reprise her role as the titular superhero. The sequel is set to debut in theaters in June 2020.
