Issa Rae producing Set It Off remake for New Line Cinema

According to Deadline, Issa Rae is set to produce a reimagining of the 1996 action drama Set It Off for New Line Cinema. While story details on the update are being kept under wraps, the trade notes that the film will not necessarily follow the story laid out in the original.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, in just his second directorial effort, Set It Off starred Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise as four friends who resort to crime after growing tired of their dead-end jobs. The film was a box office success, scoring $41 million against a modest $9 million budget; and was critically praised as a rare action title featuring a black female cast.

Rae will produce the project via her Issa Rae Productions and may star in the film. Syreeta Singleton (Black Monday) and Nina Gloster (Star) will pen the screenplay.

Rae is the co-creator of the comedy Insecure. She also appeared in the comedy Little and will star in the 2020 comedy The Lovebirds as well as the drama The Photograph.
