Director Richard Kelly’s next stop: a Rod Serling biopic

Richard Kelly’s next project will be about a man who believed that boundaries are that of imagination: Rod Serling.

The Donnie Darko director is developing a film based on the life of Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, per a report from Collider (first reported by TGWW). The plan is to go into production with the film sometime next year. Kelly will write the script, with Jason Michael Berman producing via Mandalay Pictures along with Kevin Turen, Matthew Lindner and Kelly’s manager, Brian Young.

Kelly’s subject is an interesting one, as Serling served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He later got into producing radio dramas in college, and after moving into the world of television, he subverted network’s rigid expectations by creating his own show, The Twilight Zone.

The Twilight Zone has seen multiple on-air iterations since it first debuted in October of 1959. After it’s initial run, hosted by Serling, it was revived for a theatrical adaptation in 1983, which was followed by a new Twilight Zone that debuted in 1985 before running for three seasons. Forest Whitaker hosted another incarnation of the series on UPN, but it ran for only a single season. Its latest version, which is co-created and hosted by Jordan Peele, wrapped up its first season on CBS: All Access at the end of May, and will continue its journey of sight, sound and mind into a second season.
