World War II movies and games have been saturating the market, but in recent years, more studios have been taking a crack at World War I; for example, Wonder Woman and Battlefield 1. This year we’re getting more films taking place during WWI with The King’s Man, a prequel to Kingsman, and now 1917. Universal Pictures has released the trailer for the film, which follows two young British soldiers on a mission to traverse war territory to deliver a message.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Spectre, American Beauty) and stars George MacKay as Schofield and Dean-Charles Chapman as Blake. Chapman has definitely grown up, especially since his days as Tommen Baratheon in Game of Thrones. It’s also interesting to see Colin Firth in this film since he’s absent in the Kingsman prequel, which takes place during WWI. The trailer gives off the same feel like the Dunkirk announcement trailer with little dialogue and a clock ticking.
Joining the stars are Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden as Lieutenant Blake, Andrew Scott as Lieutenant Leslie, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough as Major Hepburn, and Jamie Parker
Synopsis: At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes from the screenplay by Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film will have a limited released on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020.
