Angel Has Fallen Takes the #1 Spot, Lion King Crosses $1.5 Billion

Lionsgate and Millennium’s Angel Has Fallen exceeded expectations this weekend, bringing in $21.25 million domestically and opened in the #1 position. The Gerard Butler lead sequel was bolstered by audiences 30+, making up 58% of the audience. The film opened on par with its predecessor, 2016’s London Has Fallen, which went on to gross over $200 million at the worldwide box office.

Universal Pictures’ Good Boys slipped into second place but dipped just 45% and brought in $11.75 million over the weekend, giving it a domestic total of $42 million. Internationally the comedy has brought in $6.9 million for a worldwide total of $49 million. Produced on a reported budget of $20 million, the comedy is already a bona fide hit for the studio. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, Good Boys stars  Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon

The faith based film Overcomer opened in third place, despite only playing on 1700 screens nationwide, bringing in an estimated $8.2 million. Hailing from the filmmakers behind War Room, Courageous, and Fireproof, and produced on a reported budget of $5 million, the film is on its way to becoming a modest hit and serve as counter programming through the Labor Day holiday.

Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lion King slipped into fourth place but still managed to haul in $8.2 million domestically for a US total of $510.6 million. Internationally the film brought in $30 million for an international total of $997.9 million and a global total of $1.508 billion. Internationally the film will cross the $1 billion mark tomorrow, making it the 9th movie to reach this threshold all time and the fourth from Disney.

Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw slipped from the #2 spot to #5, bringing in $8.14 million over the weekend in the US. Domestically the spin-off has brought in $147.7 million. Internationally the film managed the biggest August opening weekend of all-time in China, pushing its international total to $441.2 million and giving it a global total of $588.9 million. Worldwide the film remains the fifth highest grossing entry in the series, with the #4 film in the series, Fast Five, sitting at $626.1 million worldwide. It’s possible the film could cross this threshold thanks to its Chinese release.

Elsewhere at the Box office:

Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not opened with $7.55 million over the weekend. The film debuted on Wednesday, bringing its domestic total to $10.57 million

Toy Story 4 has now grossed $1.031 billion to date, passing both Zootopia ($1,024M) and Finding Dory ($1,029M) to become the #6 global animated release of all-time.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 grossed an estimated $6.3 million domestically and $10.2 million internationally, giving it a global total of $74.6 million, a bomb compared to the first film which managed $352.3 million in 2016.
