Developer Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Private Division are teaming up to create a new single-player RPG, The Outer Worlds, where you can become the hero or the villain. Okay, so these are basic RPG elements seen in games like Mass Effect and Fallout, but it’s nice to see a new IP instead of seeing the nth iteration of a franchise.
Obsidian Entertainment is no stranger to the RPG genre since it has worked on games like South Park: Stick of Truth, Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Alpha Protocol.
The game is set in the Halcyon colony in a faraway galaxy, and if you’ve seen the E3 trailer, it’s got some dark humor to boot. The corporations are running everything, and nobody dares to challenge them… except you, the stranger. As a hero, villain or psychopath, you will have what it takes to expose secrets and go up against the higher-ups. As a new visitor to the colony, the choices you make will shape the story along with your character progression, companion stories, and endgame scenarios. There will be all types of futuristic weapons including one that can shrink enemies, and these will help you in completing your missions.
During E3 2019, a demo presentation was shown to attendees that gave them a taste of the town of Fallbrook, a place for drinking, drugs and gambling. We also get to see a lot of lore put into the game. For example, there’s a planet called Monarch, and the corporations decided to terraform it in order to make it the capital of the colony. The process ended in failer and caused the native plants and animals to grow bigger and tougher. You can check out the extended gameplay below.
The Outer Worlds will be released on October 25, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Microsoft Windows Store and Epic Games store.
