The Eternals is not the kind of comic book that you would expect to see onscreen. After all, they’re not as known in the mainstream comic book world as the Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man. Yet Marvel Studios is taking a similar risk that they took with Guardians with The Eternals.
Now, the biggest question you probably have is: Who or what are The Eternals? Well, as the name might suggest, they are immortals who eventually become the early manifestations of our gods. Yes, that means that the Eternals are pretty much like Thor. The legendary Jack Kirby, once again, mixes mythology with science fiction when he made these characters.
In other words, they’re the basic inspirations for the entire Greek and Roman pantheon. The Eternals primarily live in Olympia and their names are all variations of mythology. For example, the speedster Makkari is a variation of the Roman god, Mercury. The warrior Thena is a variation of the Greek god, Athena. So on, and so forth.
So that means that the roster for the film is going to be pretty large. They’re roster is comparable to the X-Men or Inhumans. But unlike the X-Men or the Inhumans, the Eternals essentially have the same powers. The team element is a big part of who they really are.
Now that we have that introduction out of the way, let’s take a look at the amazing cast that Marvel Studios put together for their ambitious project.
- Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) as Ikaris
- Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) as Kingo
- Lauren Ridloff (“The Walking Dead”) as Makkari
- Brian Tyree Henry (Child’s Play) as Phastos
- Salma Hayak (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) as Ajak, the leader of the Eternals
- Lia McHugh (upcoming The Lodge) as Sprite
- Don Lee (Train to Busan) as Gilgamesh
- Angelina Jolie (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) as Thena
Unfortunately, we don’t have any other story details available but Marvel Studios has put together such an impressive cast for this obscure comic book. Of course, this hasn’t stopped them before. With a cast like this, the film’s shaping up to be another big hit for Marvel Studios.
What do you think of The Eternals?
Chloé Zhao is directing The Eternals and the film will be released on November 6, 2020.
