Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on Game of Thrones criticism: ‘I love it’

After the Game of Thrones finale aired in May, there was a virtual cascade of opinions that started cropping up online, with several viewers expressing their distaste for the way the story was resolved.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played the sister-loving knight Jaime Lannister for eight seasons, was in Nashville with several of his former co-stars for Con of Thrones, where they discussed, among other things, the blowback to the now-infamous final episode. He was surprisingly receptive to it — at least partially.

We’re so lucky to be part of a show where people care so much about it that you also get upset when it doesn’t go the way you want it to,” Coster-Waldau began (via Deadline). “And that’s fantastic, and I love it, and I love that there was an online petition to have it rewritten.”

However, the Danish actor said that some of the criticism went a bit too far, particularly when directed at showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

The only thing I’ll say is that for anyone to imagine or to think that the two creators of this show are not the most passionate, the greatest, the most invested of all, and to for a second think that they didn’t spend the last 10 years thinking about how they were gonna end it, is kinda silly,” he explained. “And also know that they too read the comments, and even though you sit on your own and go, ‘F*cking stupid writers! Assholes!’ They really, like everyone on Game of Thrones, and there are thousands, we worked our asses off to make the best show we could for the ending.”

Based on the popular (and still unfinished) book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin, the Emmy-winning fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom. The series stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams.

The final season of Game of Thrones won’t be our last trip to Westeros however, as HBO has greenlit a pilot set 1,000 years before the events of the wildly popular sword and sorcery epic. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse have been cast in the as-yet-untitled prequel series. S.J. Clarkson (The DefendersJessica Jones) will direct the pilot.
