Avengers: Endgame and Avatar were playing a game of who can become the #1 movie of all-time at the worldwide box office. Avatar has been at the top spot for almost a decade, with Marvel Studios and Disney releasing a slightly new version of Avengers: Endgame plus a free poster (while supplies last) to entice fans to return to the theaters. With the San Diego Comic-Con weekend over, the Marvel Studios film has finally surpassed the Fox film as the #1 movie of all time at the box office. The weekend also saw the debut of The Lion King, a photorealistic remake of the classic animated film, and it made $185 million domestically. Not bad for Walt Disney Studios.
Avengers: Endgame has grossed a total of $2.79 billion, beating out Avatar’s $2.789 billion. That’s not bad considering that Avatar had rereleases. Then again, Marvel Studios had to bring in all of its heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more to take down a bunch of the Na’vi.
It’s a great time for Disney since The Lion King debuted at $185 million domestically. It beat the previous July record-holder belonging to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which made $169.1 million.
The news comes at a great time, especially since Marvel Studios made a huge impact in Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con. The cast was revealed for The Eternals, Shangi-Chi found its lead with Simu Liu and the main villain with Tony Leung as The Mandarin, and many more. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is definitely a very happy man right now.
