Sony Pictures also skipping San Diego Comic-Con this year

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) may be the zenith of all things pop culture, but it’s going to have some noticeable absences this year. As Deadline reports, Sony Pictures will be sitting out the convention this year, joining Warner Bros, DC, and Universal.

Sony’s production studio has a number of projects in the coming months, starting with Spider-Man: Far From Home next week, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood later in July. As far as the rest of 2019, they’ve got the long-awaited Zombieland 2: Double Tap, as well as the reboot of Charlie’s Angels. Looking into 2020, they’ve got another reboot of The Grudge, a Bloodshot adaptation with Vin Diesel, and the Blumhouse interpretation of Fantasy Island. By next summer, they’ll be launching their second Spider-Man spinoff (sans Spider-Man) with Jared Leto as the living vampire, Morbius.

Granted, with Far From Home and Once Upon A Time, Sony might be choosing to promote these big event films outside of SDCC. Which, of course, it will also have to do for the half-dozen genre pics coming out over the coming months. Last year they held panels for both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which together went on to gross more than a billion dollars at the box office.

San Diego Comic-Con will take place between July 17 and July 21 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA.
