Love Death + Robots renewed for second season on Netflix

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Netflix’s very well-received adult animated anthology series Love Death + Robots from Deadpool‘s Tim Miller and Gone Girl‘s David Fincher has been renewed for a second season at the streaming service!

In addition to the renewal status, the streaming service has also revealed that Jennifer Yuh Nelson, director of the latter two Kung Fu Panda films, has joined the series as the supervising director for the second season. Nelson, who got her start working as a character designer and storyboard artist on the 1996 continuation of Jonny Quest, has also worked in the animation departments for HBO’s animated adaptation of the comic character Spawn and Dark City before heading to DreamWorks Animation to work on Spirit: Stallion of the CimarronSinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and the first Madagascar film, leading up to her work on the Kung Fu Panda films and making her live-action debut with last year’s critical flop The Darkest Minds.

The series, which comprised of 18 animated shorts, will be aimed towards adults with stories that go across every genre from science fiction, comedy, fantasy and horror, including imaginative characters such as sentient dairy products, werewolf soldiers and robots gone wild.

Miller, who previously was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for the 2004 animated short Gopher Broke, returned to his animation roots with the series, utilizing his animation company Blur Studio, while the team also consisted of filmmakers from around the world and feature various animation styles including traditional 2D and photorealistic CGI.

Love, Death & Robots is my dream project,” says Miller, who will exec produce with Fincher, Jennifer Miller and Josh Donen. “It combines my love of animation and amazing stories. Midnight movies, comics, books and magazines of fantastic fiction have inspired me for decades, but they were relegated to the fringe culture of geeks and nerds of which I was a part. I’m so fucking excited that the creative landscape has finally changed enough for adult-themed animation to become part of a larger cultural conversation.”

Miller previously worked with Fincher as the designer for the opening credits sequence on the 2011 American adaptation of the acclaimed 2005 Swedish novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Fincher will be collaborating with Netflix for the third time with Love, Death & Robots following House of Cards, which debuted its sixth and final season in November 2018, and Mindhunter, which reportedly wrapped filming on its highly-anticipated second season.

The first season debuted in March to very positive reviews from critics and audiences, praising the series for its ambitions and stellar animation while also noting some of its more problematic areas in its depiction of women and excess in violence. The season currently maintains a 77% “Certified Fresh” rating based on 31 critics on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes.

Love, Death & Robots comes at a time when Netflix is making a large push in its animation field, already having the acclaimed animated hits BoJack Horseman, Carmen Sandiego and Big Mouth and having upcoming animated adaptations of Fast & Furious, Pacific RimAltered Carbon and Ghost in the Shell.
