Final Fantasy XIV live-action TV series adaptation in development
Sony Pictures Television has announced that Final Fantasy XIV Online will be developed into a live-action TV series from Square Enix and Hivemind (The Witcher, The Expanse).

The series is inspired by the characters and world of Eorzea but will revolve around an original story. Viewers can expect the show to include Final Fantasy elements such as chocobos, airships, beastmen, and even Cid. The Final Fantasy XIV series will focus on “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict.” Familiar characters from the game will appear alongside new ones.
“Final Fantasy XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateways into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike. This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience,” said Chris Parnell, Sony Pictures Television Co-President.
The Final Fantasy XIV series will be written by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (Winter’s Knight, The Wells Initiative). Given Hivemind’s first-look deal with Amazon and the company’s collaborations with Netflix, it’s possible either streamer could end up as a distributor.

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game for PC, developed and published by Square Enix in 2010. It is the fourteenth entry in the main Final Fantasy series and the second MMORPG in the series after Final Fantasy XI. The game has garnered over 16 million registered users. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, the game’s third major expansion, will launch on July 2.
