Edward Zwick’s Glory returning to theaters for special two-day event

According to JoBlo, Fathom Events and TCM Big Screen Classics are teaming up to bring Edward Zwick’s Oscar-winning historical epic Glory back to the big screen for a special two-day event on over 600 screens. This will mark the first time since its release way back in December of 1989 (it released wide on February 16, 1990) that the film will be presented on the big screen. The screenings will take place on July 21 and July 24.

For those unaware, Glory stars Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Denzel Washington (Training Day) (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Jihmi Kennedy (Gung Ho) and Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption). The film tells the true life tale of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and his efforts to lead the Union’s first all-black volunteer company during the Civil War, and their historic assault on Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863.

Glory was a hit with critics and ranked in over $26.8 million on an $18 million budget. It went on to receive five Academy Award nominations, winning three for Washington’s stunning performance, Freddie Francis’ sweeping cinematography and Donald O. Mitchell, Gregg Rudloff, Elliot Tyson and Russell Williams II’s terrific sound. (Sadly, James Horner’s unforgettable score did not receive a nomination in one of the most baffling oversights in Academy history, though the composer was nominated for his work on Field of Dreams.)
