Back in 1982, directors Jim Henson and Frank Oz brought to life The Dark Crystal, a film that utilized animatronic puppets and slowly gained a cult following. Decades later, Netflix and The Jim Henson Company have teamed up to produce a prequel to the film titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. A new teaser trailer has been released, and it’s looking to revitalize the epic fantasy featuring puppets.

The series takes place many years before the events of the film and uses classic puppetry and visual effects. The evil Skeksis is spreading sickness across the land, and it’s up to three Gelfling to help save the world. The series will contain 10 one-hour episodes.

Synopsis: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

The series is directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) and executive produced by Leterrier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. It’s co-executive produced by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and Blanca Lista.

Voice actors include Taron Egerton (Rocketman, Kingsman) as Rian, Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Brea, and Nathalie Emmanuel (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as Deet. Together, they are the three Gelfling heroes. Other Gelfling characters are voiced by Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.

Voicing the Skeksis and Mystics are Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg. Aughra will be voiced by Donna Kimball. Puppeteers will be voicing additional characters like Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid as Hup.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will premiere on Netflix Friday, August 30, 2019.
