Fox cancels The Passage and The Cool Kids after one season

It’s becoming crunch time for networks to decide on whether to continue their fall lineups. After handing out renewals to a handful of its shows thus far, Fox has announced its drama The Passage and well-received Charlie Day-created sitcom The Cool Kids won’t be returning, according to Variety.

Based on the novel trilogy of the same name from Justin Cronin, The Passage followed federal agent Brad Wolgast as he bonds with young Amy Bellafonte, a girl who he was supposed to kidnap and bring to the shady government science experiment Project Noah on a virus meant to cure all diseases but actually is turning people into vampire-like creatures. As he becomes her surrogate father figure, the two must escape the government and the brewing apocalypse.

Starring Mark-Paul Goselaar (Pitch), Saniyya Sidney (American Horror Story: Roanoke) and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Super Troopers 2), the series earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences for its muddled plot and strong performances, but in its Monday night timeslot, its ratings were rather abysmal, averaging under 4 million viewers per episode.

Co-created by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Charlie Day and Paul Fruchbom, The Cool Kids told the stories of three male senior citizens living in the Shady Meadows Retirement Community as their longtime routines are uprooted when a rebellious female resident joins the group.

Starring David Alan Grier (In Living Color), Martin Mull (Arrested Development), Leslie Jordan (American Horror Story) and Vicki Lawrence (The Carol Burnett Show), the series proved to be a hit for critics and audiences who loved a fresh take on the sitcom genre with a set of uncommon characters. Despite averaging just over 5 million viewers in its dangerous Friday night timeslot, Fox has decided to pass on bringing the series back.
