Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Episode 1 Recap

Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Episode 1 brings changes to the organization following Director Coulson’s death. Mack leads the team now, trying to do his best to honor the man who held the position before him while rebuilding the organization with new muscle. Committing himself fully to the job walls him off from others, including Yo-Yo. Meanwhile, Daisy and Simmons search space for Fitz’s cryo-chamber in order to bring him home.

New Director, New Direction

Mack attempts to keep himself grounded and from being overwhelmed in the director’s role by replaying Coulson’s messages in the morning, visiting the bar for a drink at night, and going to church on Sundays. While the new recruits have proven themselves to be strong and swift, the organization is still missing brain power with Fitz and Simmons gone. Coming up on the one year anniversary of Coulson’s death, Mack turns to May to help him find a new head of the sciences division of SHIELD.

May suggests they enlist the help of Dr. Marcus Benson, director of Natural Sciences at Culver University for help with their current dilemma. There have been reality warps that have allowed people to appear in our world. The best that SHIELD has to go on is that the appearances have occurred along ley lines. One of the guys who tried to move through the warps got stuck in a concrete wall. A devices slides from the guy’s pocket with a set of coordinates and a countdown timer.

A Show of Strength

Fitz’s ship was cut in half while floating through space. Daisy and Simmons track it to D’rillian space, where they examine the back half of the ship in a scrap yard and recover the cryo-chamber. It is empty. Simmons barely keeps it together, crawling inside the chamber to try and find a clue. Inside, she finds a plate with the chamber’s planet of manufacture.

Simmons wants to follow the lead, thinking that Fitz would go there to try and find a new chamber to freeze himself in. Daisy and the rest of the crew argue that they need to go home. The planet Nare-Atzia is in deep, deep space. Their ship is damaged. The crew is down to 4 harried individuals. They don’t have enough fuel to make the trip to the planet and back home.

A Confederate destroyer homes in on their ship. They attempt to avoid detection, but it is no use. The destroyer opens fire, forcing them to make a jump through space to avoid being blown apart. Simmons locks in the planet’s coordinates insteadof earth’s and pulls the lever to make the jump through space.

Somewhere in space, Fitz is working for an alien called the Controller.

Butterflies

May and Yo-Yo lead the teams of new recruits, one of which Yo-Yo is in a clandestine relationship with. The two lead their teams to the site described on the warp jumper’s device. Three of the other jumpers are at a natural history museum, planting explosives to destroy the building so “the Sarge” can successfully warp through. The museum explodes, sending the SHIELD agents to the ground. A reinforced semi barrels out of the blast. The driver looks like Coulson, but says he’s never heard of SHIELD when confronted. He kills a SHIELd agent, collects his troops, and drives away.
