The Joker has gone through quite a confusing journey on his way to his very first solo film. Once upon a time, there were going to be TWO movies that were going to come out. One of them was a continuation of Jared Leto’s version from Suicide Squad. The other is an origin story which is co-written and directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese. With the combination of Scorsese and Phillips, Warner Bros made the decision to greenlight the origin story first. After the screen test, we have another brand new official look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Check it out below!
Details on the film are still scarce, but sources for The Wrap have said that the film will focus on the Joker as a failed 80s comedian. Fans of Scorsese’s work will instantly recognize a correlation between Joker and Scorsese’s 1982 film, King of Comedy. So Scorsese’s involvement in the film completely makes sense here.
In addition, comic book fans will instantly recognize the correlation between this film and Alan Moore’s controversial graphic novel, “The Killing Joke”. In the graphic novel, the Joker is a struggling stand-up comedian that eventually turns to a life of crime. It’s unknown at this point if “The Killing Joke” will have a heavy influence on the film. Despite the criticism, fans consider the graphic novel to be the definitive take on the iconic Batman villain.
Those of you who are patiently waiting for the trailer won’t have to wait much longer. Warner Bros will premiere the brand new Joker trailer tomorrow. But keep a look out for our trailer description later on today as we’ll be in attendance for Warner Bros’ panel from CinemaCon.
Joker laughs his way into theaters on October 4th.
