Sadly, Episode IX will be the final film in the Skywalker Saga. Kathleen Kennedy said that the film will be the final movie of a massive nine-film arc. However, Abrams was quick to point out that the film also had to work as its own movie.
Of course, Colbert had to ask about Carrie Fisher and her role in Episode IX. J.J. Abrams said that there’s no way that you can replace Carrie Fisher. He did note that the thought of making a CGI version of Carrie Fisher was completely off the table. However, the film does use unused scenes from The Force Awakens.
With its connection to The Last Jedi, J.J. Abrams said that it doesn’t continue right after the end of Last Jedi. In addition, the group goes on this adventure together.
The panel also brought in the return of Billy Dee Williams as the suave and debonair, Lando Calrissian. “How did I find Lando? Lando never left me.” He wasn’t wrong as a picture of Lando in his snazzy cape outfit is shown on screen. It really does feel like he never left.
Naomi Ackie is the newest addition to the film and her name is Jannah. But when answering the question about whether or not she’s Lando daughter, her response was, “Lando is a very charming man, so he can have children all over the universe.”
While Finn was trying to find himself in the past two films, Boyega says that Finn is now a full-fledged member of the Resistance. As you remember from The Last Jedi, the lightsaber that Rey uses was destroyed. But was it really? “The lightsaber that Rey inherits from Luke lives,” says Ridley. So we can only assume that Rey builds a new lightsaber from the kyber crystal from the Luke’s lightsaber. The other big question is, does Rey get new force powers? J.J. nervously wouldn’t divulge on that, so it’s safe to say that there might be.
J.J. Abrams also introduced a brand new friend for BB-8. Dio is a small tiny unicycle droid that was made by the incredible Neal Scanlan team.
