During 2019’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Disney showcased a few of its newly acquired Fox properties which included the final chapter of the X-Men series, Dark Phoenix. As we know, the film will focus on Sophie Turner’s character, Jean Grey, as she embraces the uncontrollable power of the cosmic entity known as Phoenix.
During the footage, we see the X-Men inside the X-Jet heading off into space as Quicksilver says, “Space missions now? Cool.” They are on a mission to save NASA astronauts who are stranded in space. Quicksilver, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler teleport inside the NASA ship and use their powers to save the astronauts. But Jean, who seems to be holding a shield bubble of what I assume is oxygen, is the last to leave the ship, which explodes with her still inside. Somehow she is back and alive, which concerns the team, especially Professor X and Mystique. The kids then call her Phoenix.
The new mysterious character played by Jessica Chastain sees Jean and talks to her. Jean’s powers are out of control and she says she likes it. “My power destroyed everything it ever came into contact with, until you,” Chastain’s character said. “They fear you, and what they fear…”
“They seek to destroy,” Jean finishes.
Shots of the film continue as the X-Men go after Jean. Magneto is going after Jean as well. But as he challenges her, she breaks his helmet and throws him against the wall as if he was nothing.
One thing that is interesting in the film is that Jessica Chastain’s character has no name, and she is a mysterious character. But throughout the footage, I began to theorize that she might be an internal character who Jean can only see… possibly the Phoenix manipulating from inside her mind and body. Based on what she said (see above), it kind of makes sense that she is a character that only Jean can see, mentoring her when it comes to unleashing the power of the Phoenix.
Does this theory sound like it makes sense to you? Are you looking forward to the final chapter of the X-Men film franchise? Let us know! Dark Phoenix comes to your local movie theaters on June 7, 2019.
Dark Phoenix official synopsis: The X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe when one of their own, Jean Grey, starts to spiral out of control. During a rescue mission in outer space, Jean is nearly killed when she’s hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. The X-Men must now band together to save her soul and battle aliens that want to use Grey’s new abilities to rule the galaxy.
