CinemaCon 2019: Mr. Mime gets “burned” in Detective Pikachu clip (footage description)

Detective Pikachu - International Japanese Poster

At this year’s CinemaCon, a hologram of the lovable Pikachu appeared on stage during Warner Bros’ presentation. Of course, Ryan Reynolds in full comedic form as he makes fun of everyone including some of the higher-ups at Warner Bros. He didn’t come alone, though. Fortunately, he also brought with him a brand new clip from his upcoming movie, Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

The clip begins with Pikachu and Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) interrogating Mr. Mime in what seems to be a warehouse. Pikachu tells Tim that he should be the bad cop since he’s bigger while he plays the good cop. At this instant, Pikachu is trying to find out from Mr. Mime some information about the USB drive in their possession. Unfortunately, Mr. Mime doesn’t really talk so he mimes everything in riddles. Although Pikachu incorrectly guesses everything, Tim is able to decipher what Mr. Mime is saying. Unfortunately for Pikachu, Tim figures out that he’s simply insulting him. Utterly annoyed, Pikachu wants to be the bad cop now as he pounces towards Mr. Mime; only to be blocked by Mr. Mime’s ability to create invisible walls. Luckily, Tim has a brilliant idea.

He opens the imaginary door into Mr. Mime’s room and begins pouring something imaginary on Mr. Mime. Mr. Mime is reacting to all of this. On the other hand, Pikachu is confused by all this. He doesn’t know that Tim is pouring imaginary gas on Mr. Mime until he mimes farts coming out of his butt. At this moment, Tim strikes an imaginary match but Mr. Mime blows on it. Tim strikes another imaginary match but Mr. Mime extinguishes it with his fingers.

Annoyed by all this, Tim begins to pour a gas trail to the outside of the invisible building and strikes a match. Unfortunately, poor Mr. Mime is trapped within the invisible walls. At this moment, Pikachu gives him an ultimatum: Answer their questions or Tim throws the match on the “gas”. Unsurprisingly, Mr. Mime answers all of Pikachu’s questions. It’s just unfortunate for him that Tim accidentally tosses the imaginary match onto the imaginary gas.

On the whole, this clip just shows the kind of wacky and slapstick comedy that Pokémon Detective Pikachu brings to the table. Not to mention, Ryan Reynolds voicing Pikachu is beginning to grow on me as Warner Bros releases more trailers and clips. It’s not Danny DeVito but it’s still funny nonetheless.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10th.
