The first teaser trailer for Shenmue 3 didn’t exactly go well for many fans since the graphics weren’t on par with AAA games. Supporters know that making a big game with a smaller budget is no easy feat, and they were willing to look past that as long as they can continue the adventures of Ryo Hazuki as he tries to find Lan Di, his father’s killer. Yes, it’s been 18 years already (20 for the Japanese), and fans are still waiting to avenge the death of Ryo’s father. During Monaco Anime Game International Conferences 2019 (MAGIC), Ys Net released a new trailer with improved animation. It’s not a huge improvement, but it’s better than the previous version with the zombie-like expressions.
In the trailer, we see Ryo injured from a fight, the importance of the Phoenix Mirror, and learning to fight. Along with the cutscenes, we’re also introduced with actual gameplay of the fighting mechanics. Of course, it still looks a bit rough, but if the improved facial animation is any indication, we’ll likely see improvements to the fighting animation. (It does say “Work in progress. Game not final.”)
The consensus seems to be that the graphics aren’t the best, but they are good enough for a lot of fans.
“The graphics aren’t the greatest but I do love how it does have 90s SEGA aesthetic,” one fan says.
Another commenter said, “I feel the facial animations still need some improvement, not bad but not great. The little snippet of gameplay could also use some polishing. But overall I think these things will get done before its August release.”

OMG IT LOOKS SO GOOD.
It’s not some stratospheric high budget AAA but I would daydream for years about a third game and it’s in front of me. Getting teary-eyed.

Looking pretty good. Very Shenmue. It’s clear they’re going for a less realistic style but it’s grown on me. https://t.co/XDyBmjw0BQ

Of course, there are fans that are really upset about what they’ve seen from the trailer.
A disappointed fan said, “Hate the character designs. Yu been watching too much disney.”
“These graphics are awful. Wtf is wrong with his nose?” said another.
I don’t know how Shenmue fans can see that most recent trailer and think “Yeah, this will deliver fully on what I’ve been hoping for”, I mean what the fuck is this? pic.twitter.com/3XeYaFawtl

I definitely agree with many that the game’s animation and visuals are an improvement over the previous trailer while not being the best. As gamers, we have been spoiled with AAA games with impressive facial animation, and I understand why some would feel disappointed. This is, after all, a Kickstarter project with a lower budget, and the other alternative is not having closure for Shenmue I and II. Of course, sometimes having closure isn’t the best idea. Just look at Mass Effect 3, for example.
Shenmue 3 is almost upon us, and it will be available for the PlayStation 4 and PC on August 27, 2019.
