Netflix announces cancellation of series ‘One Day at a Time’

One of the most relevant and impactful series that made its way from the streaming platform and into our hearts has ended.

One Day at a Time (ODAAT), the Netflix series created by Norman Lear that follows a Cuban-American family as they move through life in the U.S., was announced to not be renewed today. In a series of tweets put out by Netflix, the streaming service gave a heartfelt announcement as to their decision to not continue the diverse show.

They also thank the creators of the series, showing their recognition of the efforts the series made to highlight the tough situations in the show. “Thank you Norman Lear for bringing this series back to television. Thank you Gloria Calderon Kellett & Mike Royce for always making us laugh and never shying away from bravely and beautifully tackling tough subject matter in a meaningful way.”

Mike Royce, one of the show’s creators, was one of the first to respond to the announcement via Twitter, in a heartfelt letter on behalf of him and his co-creator, Gloria Calderón Kellett:

I’m a huge fan of this series (check out my review of the first season here), and hearing the news that it’s been cancelled by Netflix really blows. It’s not every day that we get a show that’s so transparent and honest about being Latinx in the world we live in today. ODAAT became the window that showed the world how life isn’t as it seems for our community, and the struggles we carry daily. This series gave fans the hope and determination to believe that life can and will be okay.

You can catch the first three seasons of One Day at a Time starring Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, with Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rita Moreno on Netflix
