Disney fired James Gunn from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 when Gunn’s opponents uncovered old Twitter posts where he joked about rape and pedophilia. The director was then attached to helm The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. with reports of Idris Elba taking over Will Smith’s role as Deadshot. Now Disney has had a change of heart and has brought Gunn back on board to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
According to Deadline, Disney chairman Alan Horn had a change of heart when he met up with James Gunn on multiple occasions. He saw the way Gunn handled the initial backlash along with how he handled his public apology, and that convinced him to reinstate Gunn as the director.
So what does this mean for Warner Bros and its upcoming The Suicide Squad sequel? Well, Disney will be okay with him finishing the DC film, and once that’s done, he’ll be coming back to Disney to begin principal photography for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Since Marvel Studios never really searched for another director for the third film, it made the process easier. There was that rumor that Taika Waititi was being eyed, but he said that he wanted no part in directing a film that clearly had Gunn’s stamp all over it.
Of course, those who uncovered the old tweets will be very upset about this news. We’ll have to wait and see if they’ll be back for another round in trying to stop Gunn from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
For now, fans can get excited to see the remaining members of Guardians of the Galaxy on the big screen when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019. Nebula and Rocket Raccoon will join the Avengers to try to help those who have turned to dust during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
