As fans prepare for the upcoming third and final season of the acclaimed Netflix Marvel drama Jessica Jones, Entertainment Weekly has brought word that one of the key things to be prepared for is the lack of the menacing Kilgrave aka Purple Man portrayed by David Tennant.

EW recently sat down with the 47-year-old Doctor Who veteran to discuss the streaming service’s cancellation of the show and during their discussion he confirmed that Kilgrave will not appear in the third season and talked on his feelings of the show’s ending.

“I don’t really regard it as a cancellation so much as something having the life that it should have,” Tennant said. “Three seasons of that story is great. Rather than thinking of it as something that was canceled, I think of it as something that had three seasons that will live in the memory.”

Though Tennant’s smooth-talking villain was killed at the end of the first season by Krysten Ritter’s titular hero, he reappeared in the second season for brief appearances in the latter half of the second season in a hallucinatory matter to Jones.

The new season of Jessica Jones started production in New York City in June 2018, and details concerning Ritter’s directorial debut episode have not been released. The first two seasons of the series are available to binge now on Netflix.

The Netflix original series Marvel’s Jessica Jones was the second of four epic live-action adventure series (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist), which all led to the teaming of the main characters in Marvel’s The Defenders. Marvel’s Jessica Jones is a suspenseful, edgy look into the life of Jessica Jones, one of the most popular new Marvel characters of the last decade, as she faces demons from within and without. In its first season, Marvel’s Jessica Jones was the recipient of a prestigious Peabody Award.

Despite two well-received seasons, Netflix chose to cancel the superhero drama alongside its only other surviving Marvel action series The Punisher reportedly due to expensive licensing contracts between the streaming service and Marvel, who owns the rights to both the shows and the characters. But despite the cancellations of all five series, Hulu has kept open the possibility to reviving a handful of them as it expands its relationship with Marvel.

In the second season, New York City private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is beginning to put her life back together after murdering her tormenter, Kilgrave. Now known throughout the city as a super-powered killer, a new case makes her reluctantly confront who she really is while digging deeper into her past to explore the reasons why.

Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) is joined by a returning cast that includes Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse) and new cast members Janet McTeer and J.R. Ramirez, among others.
