During the editing phase, Avengers: Endgame was said to be 3 hours long, but the final film could always be edited for a shorter runtime. Usually a longer runtime would mean fewer showtimes for the film, and that could affect the box office numbers. However, this is Avengers we’re talking about, and Avengers: Infinity War made over $1 billion despite clocking in at 2 hours and 40 minutes. Well, the Russo brothers have said that the film could still be possibly 3 hours long when it hits theaters. That’s definitely great news for fans who want more Avengers.
With Avengers: Infinity War already being a long film, Marvel Studios should be okay with Avengers: Endgame having a 3-hour runtime as long as there are no pacing issues. Plus, there has been positive feedback for the lengthy run time from four different test screenings.
“I think the studio is down with what the best story is,” Joe Russo told Collider. “Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we’ve had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is. We’re still doing work to it. We’re not done with it. Again, this is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate.”
There’s a rumor where the film will have an intermission. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King has a runtime of 3 hours and 20 minutes, but it didn’t have an intermission. Perhaps that won’t be the case with Avengers: Endgame.
Rumor has it Marvel is considering an intermission for AVENGERS: ENDGAME as it is currently clocking at three hours.
Bring it on. I love intermissions. Makes the movies that have them feel very epic. Besides, a pee break would be nice.

However, the Russo brothers mentioned that nobody went for a bathroom break during the test screenings.
“We have screened the movie four times for audiences now,” Anthony Russo said. “For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom.”
The final length is still in question, but I’m definitely okay with spending 3 hours with the Avengers.
The film is directed by the Russo brothers from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
Avengers: Endgame will be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.
