Aquaman is a huge hit, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and becoming the #1 DC film of all time. That’s pretty impressive since it beat out the other DC superhero films where Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are considered the holy trinity of DC superheroes. With the film’s success, Warner Bros. is quickly moving the gears for an Aquaman sequel, and we have news that it will be opening in theaters on December 16, 2022.
It looks like Warner Bros. definitely enjoyed coming out as the winner when it released Aquaman on December 21, 2019. The film was competing in the same week as Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns. And then there’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which came out the week before. Will other high-profile films be released on that same date or week as the Aquaman sequel? So far there are no takers.
Aquaman was directed by James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with the film grossing over $1.14 billion worldwide. Jason Momoa, who plays the titular hero, will most likely reprise his role in the sequel. Johnson-McGoldrick will be back as well to write the sequel. James Wan said that he’ll return to direct Aquaman 2 only if the script is “seaworthy.” Currently, there’s a deal for him to return as producer along with Peter Safran.
Audiences got to experience The Trench in Aquaman, which featured the creepy fish-like creatures that attacked Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard). Wan and Safran are working on bringing a spinoff film about The Trench to the big screen.
Warner Bros has a lot of DC film projects lined up including Shazam! being released on April 5th, the Joker film on October 4th, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 on June 6, 2020, DC Super Pets on May 21, 2021, The Batman on June 25, 2021 and The Suicide Squad on August 6, 2021.
