Amber Ruffin’s Village Gazette gets a pilot presentation order at NBC

According to Deadline, NBC has given a pilot presentation order to Amber Ruffin and Seth Myers’ new comedy series Village Gazette. Written by Ruffin and Shelly Gossman, the single-camera comedy will also star Ruffin with Universal TV set as the studio. A pilot presentation is typically much shorter than a traditional pilot, instead shooting for only one day in order to create a general feel for the project.

Village Gazette will follow the story of Amber (Ruffin), the editor of the Benson Village Gazette. She loves fluff pieces that demonstrate the idyllic nature of life in her hometown. When the newspaper owners hire a reporter who’s looking to uncover a juicy story in Benson, he threatens to unravel the happy denial Amber has been living in.

Ruffin and Gossman will also serve as the series’ executive producers along with Andrew Singer, Meyers and Mike Shoemaker of Sethmaker Shoemakers Productions and Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels through his Broadway Video banner.

In 2014, Ruffin became a writer for Late Night With Seth Meyers, making her the first black woman to write for a US late-night talk show. She gained recognition through the hit segments that she does in the show like “Amber Says What,” “Amber’s Late Night Safe Space” and “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell”.
