Sony has been trying to get the Uncharted film off the ground, but it has been plagued with issues of directors dropping like flies. There was a version that was supposed to star Mark Wahlberg with David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) as the director. Other directors once attached included Neil Burger (The Upside), Seth Gordon (Baywatch), and Shawn Levy (Netflix’s Stranger Things). Now a new director has entered, and it’s Dan Trachtenberg according to Variety. He’s known for directing 10 Cloverfield Lane, and this version of Uncharted follows Nathan Drake’s younger years, with Tom Holland playing the adventurer.
The Uncharted movie project definitely has problems keeping a director, but let’s see how long Trachtenberg will last before he leaves. This is likely not the case since Sony has dates for principal photography, and that means it’s going to be a reality very soon.
Uncharted is based on the video game series following Nathan Drake, a character that is very relatable and is quick with the jokes and quips. The series is heavily inspired by films like Indiana Jones and games like Tomb Raider. Throughout his journey, Nathan has discovered lost cities including El Dorado, Shangri-La, Atlantis of the Sands, and Libertatia. Players even had a chance to play a younger Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, which means that a film starring a younger Nathan Drake shouldn’t be that foreign.
Developer Naughty Dog has mentioned that Uncharted 4 was going to be their last game starring Nathan Drake, so news of a new live-action film should spark excitement for fans who want more adventures involving the protagonist.
In Uncharted 4, players were able to find out more about young Nathan. With Tom Holland attached to play, fans will get to see what treasures are in store for him as he matures into adulthood.
Trachtenberg is no stranger to video games since he directed a short fan film called Portal: No Escape.
Trachtenberg also directed Playtest, a Black Mirror episode that followed the main character joining a video game company.
Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) has written a draft for the Uncharted movie with Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD) having a chance to take a crack at it. Mark Walker and Jon Rosenberg are rewriting the script, and they are working with Trachtenberg on an upcoming sci-fi project called Crime of the Century, a time-travel heist film.
For now, we can enjoy the fan-made Uncharted film starring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake.
