Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will use iconic look for monster designs

One of the reasons that author Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was such a memorable book trilogy were the illustrations by Stephen Gammell. When asked on Twitter if the creatures in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will look like Gammell’s illustrations, producer Guillermo Del Toro responded with a simple “Yes.”

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book series was first published during the 1980s. The film follows a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding the sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.

The movie will be directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane DoeTrollhunter) and is co-written by Daniel and Kevin Hageman along with del Toro, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. At one point del Torro (The Shape of Water, Trollhunters, Pan’s Labyrinth) was set to direct the film, but recently del Toro decided to only serve as a producer on the project.

Entertainment One will distribute the project in Canada, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Benelux, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland. CBS Films will distribute the feature in the U.S. through Lionsgate.  Sean Daniel, Elizabeth Grave, Jason F. Brown, and J. Miles Dale will also be producing.

No official release date has been revealed, but the horror film should be coming to theaters in 2019.
