Rampage box office grows to $148.6 million globally in first weekend

While at first it looked like A Quiet Place would again top the domestic box office after a strong Friday the 13th performance, in the end Warner Bros. Pictures‘ new action adventure Rampage came out on top with $34.5 million from 4,101 theaters, an average of $8,413 per location. Based on the video game, the Brad Peyton-directed film received an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Made for $120 million, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Internationally, Rampage opened with a bigger than expected $114.1 million in 61 territories on approximately 39,800 screens, which means the global total is already up to $148.6 million. The film earned $55 million this weekend from 21,500 screens in China alone.

A Quiet Place (Paramount Pictures) dropped to second place with $32.6 million (a dip of just 29% in ticket sales) to take its total to $99.6 million after two weeks. Made for just $17 million, A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski, who also stars opposite his real-life wife Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds.

Opening in third place was Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (Universal Pictures), which grossed $19 million from 3,029 theaters, an average of $6,299 per location. Internationally, Truth or Dare opened in seven markets with $2.6 million. Receiving a B- CinemaScore, the horror thriller was directed by Jeff Wadlow and stars Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Nolan Gerard Funk, Hayden Szeto, and Sophia Taylor Ali. It cost just $3.5 million to make.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One (Warner Bros. Pictures) added $11.2 million in the fourth spot and has made $114.6 million domestically after three weeks. The adaptation of the Ernest Cline book earned another $33.8 million overseas this weekend to push its international total to $360.2 million ($192.8 million from China) and worldwide total to $474.8 million. Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.

Rounding out the top five was Blockers (Universal Pictures), which earned $10.3 million and has grossed $36.9 million after two weeks. Internationally, the $21 million comedy has made $16 million and the global total is at $52.9 million. Directed by Kay Cannon, Blockers stars Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, John Cena, Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Indira Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlan.k

In sixth place, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther brought in another $5.3 million to bring its domestic total to $673.8 million. With an international take of $2.6 million this weekend, the overseas total has now climbed to $639.7 million, which means the film has now passed The Dark Knight Rises ($636.8 million). Worldwide, Black Panther has grossed $1.313 billion and is No. 10 on the all time global list behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($1.332 billion). The Ryan Coogler-directed film stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. With the success of Black Panther, The Walt Disney Studios global box office has crossed the $2 billion mark ahead of the global release of the highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War.

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (Fox Searchlight) increased its theater count to 1,939 and collected $5 million its fourth weekend, for a total of $18.5 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $8.7 million. Isle of Dogs features the voices of F. Murray Abraham, Bob Balaban, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Mari Natsuki, Yojiro Noda, Kunichi Nomura, Edward Norton, Yoko Ono, Koyu Rankin, Liev Schreiber, Fisher Stevens, Tilda Swinton, Akira Takayama, Courtney B. Vance, and Frank Wood.
