As the Disney/Fox deal is looming on the horizon, let us not forget that there are still two X-Men films coming next year. One of them is Deadpool 2 and the other is X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Now, I know you’re thinking to yourself “why are they redoing the Dark Phoenix storyline” when they already royally messed it up with X-Men: The Last Stand. Although I share your sentiments, people seem to forget that X-Men: The Last Stand ever existed (can’t blame them) and I’m willing to give this storyline one more shot.
Well, today is the day we get our first look at the film. Entertainment Weekly has given us a bunch of X-Men: Dark Phoenix stills to hold us over until the trailer is released.
Either way, check out some of the X-Men: Dark Phoenix stills and what the cast had to say below!
Here we have Charles Xavier, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Storm reunited in what looks to be a funeral scene. According to Jennifer Lawrence, “I would call Dark Phoenix a drama,” says Lawrence. “We have really great action scenes and we go to space like within the first five minutes of the movie. So it’s definitely exciting but emotionally all these characters are taking the biggest, most extreme dives than they have in the whole series.”
Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, Mystique is back with a brand new hairdo. The last time we saw her in X-Men: Apocalypse, she was training the young X-Men in the Danger Room. “She’s grown up a lot,” says Lawrence. “She’s more maternal which surprised me. She starts to get more protective of the [school] children and Charles wants to push them to prove to the world that mutants can be good for humanity and I just see them as small children.”
Joining the cast as the villain is Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game). According to EW, Chastain’s character is an “otherworldly shapeshifter who manipulates Phoenix for her own agenda”. Speaking about the character, Chastain said, “I keep thinking of the vet who tells you need to put your dog down. There’s something very clinical about it.”
Jessica Chastain isn’t the only new person to join Dark Phoenix. Long-time X-Men producer, Simon Kinberg, is making his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix. If there’s any person you should thank or blame for Kinberg behind-the-camera, it’s Jennifer Lawrence. “Honestly, the person who most really wanted me to direct was Jen Lawrence,” says Kinberg. “I give her credit or blame depending on how it goes.”
Well, here it is. Here is your very first look at Sophie Turner as the Omega-level powerful Phoenix.
It’s must be remembered that the Phoenix Force gives Jean Grey this kind of schizophrenic side to her. As Turner said, “so many scenes I have to go from broken-down Jean — that’s when she’s most susceptible to Phoenix infiltrating her — to this confident, arrogant, judgmental character within milliseconds.”
Lastly, it’s important to realize that this will be the X-Men’s first film with an intergalactic angle to it. In this concept art, we see the moment when an intergalactic flare unlocks Jean’s Phoenix powers. Believe it or not, this all happens in the first 5-minutes of the movie.
