Life Is Strange: Before the Storm – Episode 3 ‘Hell Is Empty’ interview and preview

Fans of Life Is Strange will soon get to finish Chloe and Rachel’s journey when Life Is Strange: Before the Storm – Episode 3 ‘Hell Is Empty’ becomes available on December 19. I had the chance to check out a preview of the third episode along with interviewing Deck Nine in Santa Monica this past Monday. And once again we’re in good hands as the developers have crafted a tale that’s worthy of Chloe and Arcadia Bay.

At the end of the last episode, players were in for a big shock. The “mistress” that was making out with Rachel’s dad at the park turns out to be her real mother. Her life is a lie, and it’s up to you, aka Chloe, to cheer her up in the next episode. The demo starts out with Rachel in her room feeling depressed, with Chloe trying to figure out a way to bring some happiness into her life. To do that, I combined a flashlight and a night sky lamp to create a super night sky lamp to show her how beautiful life can be. Did that do the trick? Well, kind of, since Rachel was in a talkative mood. However, you can tell that she is really devastated and is on the verge of wanting to escape life. Well, it’s a good thing you’re there to help make that possible.

We’re introduced to another dream sequence, and this one has Chloe on a stage sitting with her dad, who’s driving an imaginary car. It’s an emotional scene that further exhibits her struggle of lost, and it almost had me tearing up.

Chloe heads back to her place to get ready for what’s ahead, and we start to see hints of David making a mess of her bedroom. Afterward, she takes a shower, and it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Finally, you’ll get to see her transform to her signature look from the first Life Is Strange game. Chloe is seen with newly dyed hair, beanie, and necklace.

Life Is Strange: Before the Storm

“We’re staying true to Chloe as a character at this time of her life,” Chris Floyd, co-game director at Deck Nine Games, tells Nerd Reactor. “When it comes to things like her grief over her father, of course, we knew we had to tackle that. That’s really at the heart of her situation when she’s 16 years old. What I think really works in the course of the story we’re telling is that we have those moments where we dig really dip into Chloe’s lost. But we also have the presence of Rachel as this person who is coming into her life and suddenly turns it all around. So we can have moments of joy and excitement, and these intimate moments of a relationship starting that play really nicely back and forth in Chloe’s life.”

Will players see more surprises in episode 3 like the ending of episode 2?

“There will definitely be more surprises, “Floyd said. “That’s really at the heart of what we wanted to do with Rachel. We sort of know from season one… Chloe says, ‘Rachel saved me. She’s my angel.’ So that part of the story, it was exciting to see how Chloe’s life transformed with the influence of Rachel. But as we crafted her story, we also said, ‘Let’s take a look at Rachel. Why does she need Chloe?’ So this conflict in her family life and this mystery of who Rachel is was something we thought, ‘Oh, maybe [she’s] a kind of broken but ultimately strong character like Chloe. Maybe someone like that is just what Rachel needs to get through this moment in her life as well.’ So we got to sort of weave those two issues between these two girls together.

Life Is Strange: Before the Storm – Episode 3 ‘Hell Is Empty’ will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Also, if you didn’t get the chance yet, check out the trailer below as we get to see Chloe and her signature look.

Synopsis: Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is set in Arcadia Bay, three years before the events of the first game in the series. Players will take on the role of a rebellious 16-year-old Chloe Price who forms an unlikely friendship with Rachel Amber; a beautiful and popular girl destined for success. When Rachel’s world is turned upside down by a family secret, it takes this new-found alliance to give each other.

And in other Life Is Strange news, the first game by Dontnot Entertainment will be available on iOS soon. Yes, that means you’ll get to play as Max and rewind time with your iPhone and iPad. Bring some tissues with you as you play on the go.
