Last week the character performance service, Side, launched a new studio in Los Angeles. The company may not be a household name, but it has been in the business for 20 years and has worked on big video game titles like The Witcher 3, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Battlefield 1 and Hitman.

With a new studio in LA, Side has received interest from clients about video game-related film projects. Things are being kept on the hush hush. Hopefully, we’ll get to hear news about what it is working on really soon.

“As the industry has matured and character performances in games have become much more sophisticated, we’ve been very excited to be at the forefront of that evolution,” said Side’s senior director and co-founder Andy Emery. “For us over the years, that means things like introducing professional directors in voice sessions and in mocap shoots, changing casting slightly towards more theatrical and screen actors rather than voice-over talents, developing tools and tech that actually allow actors a fighting chance of getting some kind of context when a script is half a million words with branching dialogue.”

With Side LA, the company was able to build the studio from the ground up.

Bringing the Service to the LA Market

“I was with Sony PlayStation for 1o years before I jumped to Side,” Jacquie Shriver, Head of Studio at Side LA, tells Nerd Reactor. “Side in London was the most amazing client. [It’s an] amazing service with the most passionate group of people who really wanted the performances to be the best that it possibly could instead of just providing a studio or service and ‘Here you go. This is what you asked for.'”

Shriver continued, “I’m the most excited about all the projects that are coming through Los Angeles that are looking for Los Angeles talent, getting to be a part of a bunch of projects that know the Side brand in other parts of the world who want access to the Los Angeles market and all the great actors and talent and the motion capture facilities that we have here. The same kind of services that I experienced as a client in London, I’m excited to bring THAT client service to the LA market.”
