Kevin Smith steps away from ‘Buckaroo Banzai’ TV series

You can’t be the type of person who goes out into this world, claims to know a ton about movies and TV shows, and not know who Kevin Smith is. Kevin Smith, honestly, is one of the most prominent yet humble individuals in the industry that can say what he truly feels about a situation- good or bad- and still have the fan base that he currently has. While I was with the Nerd Reactor team down in San Diego earlier this year for Comic-Con, we were walking outside of the hotel next to the convention center, and right there, standing like he was some ordinary guy, was Kevin Smith. The dude was so friendly and fun, and seriously had the patience of a saint, because he took so many pictures with everyone who walked by, myself included. One of the best experiences I’ve had with a filmmaker, by far. So what does a guy, with his demeanor and personality, do when he hears about some kind of craziness going on with a project that he’s heading from the internet? He goes to the internet, of course!

Smith took to his Facebook page to do one of his regular live videos, and address news that he found out while browsing the web. While perusing google to locate a Bedknobs and Broomsticks story, Smith was “caught off-guard” when found an article on The Hollywood Reporter stating that MGM is suing the original writer, Earl Mac Rauch, and director, Walter Richter, for the rights of the classic Sci-fi film, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Uniquely enough, it was the first time that Smith had even heard the news! Promptly after reading the article, Smith faced his fans on social media, and addressed the fact that this isn’t how he normally operates.

“This was surprising because this was the first that I’d heard about it — not that there was a Buckaroo Banzai TV show. Yes, we were all hoping to do that, but I had no idea they were gonna sue the creators of Buckaroo Banzai to do that. Now, whether that’s right or not is not for me to say. You’ve got two parties that maintain they own something and whatnot.” He goes on to tell fans that he feels that this wasn’t what was talked about before, and thus, feels he needs to do what is right. “I’m no longer involved. I don’t wish anybody harm; I wish all parties well. I hope these dudes come to an agreement, and if they do and they still want me involved down the road, I’ll be here. But why would they?”

Check out his video below, where he begins to talk about the lawsuit at about the 4:00 mark:
