Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
In the previous episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Tic, Leti, and George found themselves welcomed to Ardham Lodge after a gruesome monster attack in the woods. In Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 2, Tic learned of his connection to Ardham and the Sons of Adam, while continuing the search for his father, Montrose.
Ardham Lodge
Though Tic remembered the monster encounter the previous night, Leti and George didn’t seem to. Instead, they reveled in the extensive wardrobe that miraculously fit Leti like a glove and the collection of all of George’s favorite books. Tic realized that they were trying to keep them there. William, the man who welcomed them in, explained that Ardham Lodge was a replica of one that burned down in 1833. Titus Braithwaite, a distant cousin of the current occupant Samuel Braithwaite, was a founder of a secret society called the Sons of Adam.
While in town, George explained that Tic’s mother was descended from a slave who had escaped a fire. They realized that Tic may be a direct descendant of Titus Braithwaite. They came across a stone tower guarded by a woman with dogs. George noted the foundation, which would indicate the tower had a dungeon likely holding Montrose. In the woods, they came across another monster, but a whistle from Christina Braithwaite called it off.
Men Only
Tic met Samuel Braithwaite as he was getting a portion of his liver removed. In their rooms, Tic, Leti, and George experienced twisted visions of people they loved. Tic saw Ji-Ah, who tried to kill him. Leti saw Tic, who unveiled a deadly snake in his pants. George saw Tic’s mother. Samuel’s guests watched them as they were terrorized in their rooms.
George found a secret room through the bookshelf. He found a book containing the bylaws of “The Order of Ancient Dawn”. When Tic and George arrived at the men-only Sons of Adam dinner, William insisted that they belonged. They were served part of Samuel’s liver. George announced that he had read the bylaws. Though he was black, Tic was an automatic member their Order, as he was a direct descendant of Titus. He was a special kind that could give orders to regular members. Tic ordered everyone except Samuel to leave. He then ordered Samuel to bring him Montrose.
Garden of Eden
Montrose had escaped the dungeon in the tower through a tunnel in the wall. Tic, George, and Leti found him and tried to drive them out of town. Unfortunately, they hit an invisible barrier. Samuel shot Leti and George. He needed Tic for the ceremony at dawn. They healed Leti but would hold off healing George until after Tic participated. Christina explained that they were trying to open a gate to the Garden of Eden to gain immortality.
The ceremony causes the house to collapse. Tic saw his ancestor and followed her out to safety. He found Leti outside with George’s car. In the backseat, Montrose held George, who had died.
