Amy Pascal planning to resurrect Universal’s Bride of Frankenstein

Coming off from the critical and commercial success of Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Variety brings word that Academy Award-nominated producer Amy Pascal has been exploring ways to bring a new life to Universal Pictures‘ long-in development reboot film of The Bride of Frankenstein. Last summer, Pascal decided to move her overall production deal to Universal from Sony Pictures.

“Amy expressed interest in being involved with The Bride of Frankenstein, and just as the studio has done with numerous other filmmakers, we empowered her to explore a new vision for the Universal monster character and come back with a new and inventive take,” The outlet’s Universal Pictures source said. “Nothing has been solidified in an official capacity.”

The outlet notes that Pascal had also talked to Jurassic Park writer David Koepp, who was the one previously tasked to write the Angelina Jolie-led film back in 2015. Additionally, A Quiet Place writer-director John Krasinski had also reportedly been interested in the idea of doing a new iteration of the Bride and other Universal monsters.

Based on the studio’s classic monster, The Bride of Frankenstein reboot has been in development since 2015 with David Koepp signing on the screenwriter. In 2017, Bill Condon has been tapped to direct with Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Angelina Jolie attached to lead the film as the iconic pair of monsters. However, after Tom Cruise’s 2017 The Mummy film was met with negative reviews, the studio decided not go through with the production of Condon’s film.

Koepp previously described his vision as a liberation tale about a female monster created for companionship who has quite the opposite in mind. It is still unclear whether Angelina Jolie is still attached to portray the titular monster or not. But according to the outlet, she reportedly remains committed to the project as long as the right creative team comes along with it.

If Amy Pascal’s The Bride of Frankenstein pushes through, it would be the newest addition to the list of Universal’s upcoming monster projects which includes: Dexter Fletcher’s film about Dracula henchman Renfield, Paul Feig’s Dark ArmyElizabeth Banks’ Invisible Woman and Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man which is set to premiere this February 28.
