Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic movie rumored to be in the works

Since last summers Solo: A Star Wars story was released to a tepid response from both moviegoers and critics, Disney and Lucasfilm have been quietly rethinking their approach to their space opera. Although there currently are two trilogies in various stages of development, one from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and another from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Now, Buzzfeed News has word that a film based on the epic 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in the works, with Laeta Kalogridis writing. Kalogridis has written sci-if films like Alita: Battle Angel, Terminator: Genisys, as well as created the Netflix series Altered Carbon, so she’d clearly be cut out of the job.

However, neither Kalogridis nor Lucasfilm have offered up a comment for clarification as of this writing, so it’s just a rumor at this point. In fact, the only official word comes from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who told MTV News last April that “we are developing something to look at” regarding Knights of the Old Republic, but added she had “no idea where things might fall.”

Knights of the Old Republic, the game, was set thousands of years before the events of the Star Wars films, follows the player as they try to quelch an uprising against the Republic. Eventually, they join forces with Bastila Shan, who’s one of the most revered female characters in the larger Star Wars franchise.

While The Rise of Skywalker will close out the sequel trilogy in December, the direction of Star Wars on the big screen is up in the air at the moment, the small screen is a slightly different story. First, the live-action series The Mandalorian will be available to stream when Disney+ launches November 12, and then the live-action prequel to Rogue One, though no premiere date has been set. A third live-action series was also rumored by Disney head Bob Iger, though no details have emerged.
