Avengers: Endgame directors explain Captain America’s ending

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame just had the biggest opening ever for a movie with over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. In addition to making Disney a lot of money, it has also caused people to feel very emotional. One report had a woman rushed to the hospital after sobbing uncontrollably and another had a man beaten up for shouting out spoilers in front of a crowd waiting in line. Now that the movie’s out, there are many questions. One that many people have in mind is the ending involving Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Co-directors Joe Russo has the answer to that.

Spoilers Ahead

Avengers: Endgame is the conclusion to Avengers: Infinity War and the closing to the Infinity War saga. The original Avengers are the main characters and each character has a definite closing to his or her arc. At the end of the film, Captain America was tasked with returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful place and time. He says his farewells to Bucky and Sam before traveling back in time and was supposed to come back. However, Steve shows up as an old man sitting on a bench. It’s then revealed to Sam that he lived a happy life with Peggy Carter, even marrying her.

Avengers: Endgame sets up its time travel rules where if you were to change the past, it creates a new alternate timeline instead of changing the current timeline. If Captain America traveled back in time and had a whole new life with Peggy in an alternate timeline, how is he appearing as an old man in the main timeline?

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality,” Joe said via EW. “The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?”

So how did Captain America end up in the main timeline?

“Interesting question, right?” Joe added. “Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking.”

The director doesn’t give out all the information, and the filmmakers are intentionally holding back on revealing too much.

It seemed that Bucky knew that Captain America wasn’t coming back soon, especially with the way he tells Sam to go ahead to talk to old Steve Rogers.

“Especially when he says goodbye,” Joe explained. “He says, ‘I’ll miss you.’ Clearly he knows something.”

“Sam doesn’t know something,” he said.

In the end, Steve Rogers offers the vibranium shield to Sam, telling him that it’s his, which he accepts. This definitely teases that Sam Wilson is going to take the mantle of Captain America. We’ll likely know more when the Falcon and Winter Soldier series comes to Disney+.

Synopsis: The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from the screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.
