Warner Bros’ Kevin Tsujihara says upcoming DC films won’t be as connected

Aquaman and Wonder Woman have both made a lot of money for Warner Bros, making over $1 billion and $800 million, respectively. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League turned a profit, but they didn’t meet the studio’s expectations. With the standalone films doing a better job, Warner Bros has decided not to focus on a shared universe.

Kevin Tsujihara, the CEO of Warner Bros, has revealed that they will be focusing on standalone DC films. That’s not to say that they won’t ever consider another Justice League film in the future, but currently, they’re not planning on it.

“The upcoming slate, with Shazam, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey, feels like we’re on the right track,” Tsujihara tells the LA Times. “We have the right people in the right jobs working on it.”

“The universe isn’t as connected as we thought it was going to be five years ago,” he continued. “You’re seeing much more focus on individual experiences around individual characters. That’s not to say we won’t at some point come back to that notion of a more connected universe. But it feels like that’s the right strategy for us right now.”

With Aquaman and Wonder Woman making a lot of money, it says to Warner Bros that they don’t need to spend a lot of money on a superhero crossover film. Justice League was a film that gathered DC’s finest like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. It’s estimated to cost $300 million to produce and only grossed $657 million at the worldwide box office. Now take a look at Aquaman, which grossed $1.139 billion worldwide with an estimated budget of $160–200 million. It’s no surprise that Warner Bros has decided to change its strategy.

“What Patty Jenkins did on Wonder Woman illustrated to us what you could do with these characters who are not Batman and Superman,” Tsujihara added. “Obviously, we want to get those two in the right place, and we want strong movies around Batman and Superman. But Aquaman is a perfect example of what we can do. They’re each unique and the tone’s different in each movie.”
