Riz Ahmed will be producing and starring in his upcoming project Mughal Mowgli. According to Variety, the Venom star also co-wrote the script with Bassam Tariq (Ghosts of Sugar Land), who will direct the film.

Described as a spiritual music drama, Mughal Mowgli follows a British Pakistani rapper who, just before of his first world tour kicks off, is struck down by an illness that threatens to derail his big break.

Ahmed has previously won an Emmy for his role in HBO’s crime drama The Night Of and later that year went on to star in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jacques Audiard’s 2018 Western The Sisters Brothers. However, the actor also has a musical side. With his musical persona, Riz MC, Ahmed emerged in the London hip hop scene as a rap battle champion. He’s since written songs and performed both as a solo artist and with his band, Swet Shop Boys.

Ahmed will produce via his Left Handed Films banner. Thomas Benski and Bennett McGhee of Pulse Films will also produce along with Michael Peay. BBC Films, Cinereach, SFFILM Invest, Vice Studios, and RYOT Films have all boarded the project to bankroll production.

Executive producers include Dimitra Tsingou for Pulse Films, Eva Yates for BBC Films, and Suroosh Alvi for Vice Studios. Pulse Films will also be producing in association with Silvertown Films and Left Handed Films.
