NBC renews The Blacklist for seventh season

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that after six well-received seasons for the network, the James Spader-led crime thriller The Blacklist will be returning to NBC for a seventh season.

Though NBC and Sony Pictures TV had inked a deal last year for a two-season renewal order for the series, covering the sixth and seventh seasons, Sony just confirmed new deals for stars Megan Boone, Diego Klatenhoff and Harry Lennix, confirming the show’s return. However, Spader (Avengers: Age of Ultron)’s deal expires at the end of the seventh season, leaving the series’ future up in the air for the moment.

For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington has been one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. After brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe for years, he’s now mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: he will help them catch an entire “blacklist” of politicians, mobsters, spies and international terrorists but only under the condition that he works exclusively with Elizabeth “Liz” Keen, an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico. Red will teach Liz to think like a criminal and “see the bigger picture”… whether she wants to or not.

The Blacklist premiered on September 23, 2013 and is now in its sixth season on NBC, having moved timeslots again from previous Wednesday night slot to its new Friday night home, but even in the night known as the graveyard for shows, the series has maintained solid ratings, garnering an average of 7.36 million viewers across the first nine episodes aired thus far.

The series, which returned for its latest season on January 3, joins a list of other NBC series to score early renewals, including the entire Chicago franchise, New AmsterdamBrooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, Superstore and Will & Grace.

The next episode of the sixth season of The Blacklist will air on Friday, March 15 at 9 p.m. PST, with the previous episodes available to watch now on NBC’s website.
