Mike Judge extends overall deal with HBO, sets two new comedies

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Mike Judge (Silicon Valley) has signed a new two-year overall deal extension with HBO, including production commitments for QualityLand and A5, two new comedies for the premium cable network.

QualityLand is described as the story of humanity’s struggle against the tyranny of convenience. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Marc-Uwe Kling and is a co-production between HBO and Lionsgate/3 arts. Judge will co-write and will executive produce the pilot with Josh Lieb (Silicon Valley). Michael Rotenberg will oversee for 3 Arts.

A5 is described as a limited series centered on a bioengineer who discovers the gene that makes a person an asshole and attempts to answer the questions nagging at all of us: Why do assholes exist? Why have they come to dominate our culture? And can they be cured?

Judge will co-write the series and will executive produce alongside Etan Cohen (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butt-Head). Rotenberg and 3 Arts Productions will also executive produce.

The outlet notes that the deal is in the eight-figure range and includes all forms of TV except animation. Judge’s Tales From the Tour Bus is currently airing on Cinemax and has also been considering a revival of King of the Hill for Fox.

QualityLand and 45 join HBO’s comedy lineup that includes Ballers, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Divorce, Insecure, Los Espookys, and the recently ordered run. A return date for Silicon Valley has not yet been confirmed, and there are rumors it could be coming back for a final season.
