Brie Larson on Captain Marvel’s smiling controversy and film’s response to that

There have been fans upset about Brie Larson not showing enough emotions in the Captain Marvel trailers. One of the emotions not prominent in the trailers was smiling. The actress talks about how the smiling controversy is something that women experience. She also advised those who aren’t women having the option of doing better.

Minor Spoiler Alert: There’s a scene where a man on a motorcycle tells Carol Danvers to smile.

“That’s just a depiction of the female experience,” Brie Larson said. “That’s just what it’s like. So it didn’t really both me that much when I saw that that was the reaction because that’s just how it goes.”

The scene is definitely an example of art imitating life.

“It happens,” she added. “This is part of why art that depicts the female experience is so important because on one hand, for women and girls it allows us to go, ‘Oh, I have that experience, too.’ And those that aren’t in our bodies can go, ‘Wait, that happens to you? We’ve gotta do better.'”

Captain Marvel co-director Anna Boden talks about the whole smiling scene and how she isn’t surprised at the online reactions.

“It was always in the script. It’s not an uncommon thing for women to hear,” Boden said. “So it doesn’t surprise me at all that it was in social media. I think a lot of women can relate to that moment.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time fans were upset about a superhero not smiling enough. There were those complaining about Henry Cavill not smiling or showing enough emotions as Clark Kent, aka Superman, in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Synopsis: The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and written by Boden, Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jac Schaeffer from a story by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse. It stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Lee Pace as Ronin, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Algenis Perez Soto as Att-Lass, Rune Temte as Bron-Char, McKenna Grace as young Carol Danvers, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Jude Law as the Starforce Commander.

Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8, 2019.
