Smartphones are getting more powerful, and with more power comes more battery usage. To keep your phone on while you’re out and about, portable chargers have been the answer to many people. COAL is a company that wants to bring fast power to consumers, and with the COAL Catalyst portable charger, it aims to do just that.

The COAL Catalyst, featuring Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and INOV technology, comes in two different sizes and 5 unique designs. We had the chance to test out the 12000mAh COAL Catalyst portable charger with the cube design, and it’s a beast in terms of size and battery life. It has 2 USB outputs and one input port for the USB-C cable.

The company states that a full charge takes just 2 hours from the charger to phone. I decided to put it to the test using my Samsung Galaxy S9+, and it was able to deliver. As for charging the actual COAL Catalyst charger, it took me 4.5 hours, and I was able to completely charge my phone around two to three times from one full charge from the charger.

Our COAL Catalyst portable charger features a sturdy yet soft-touch finish with a sleek hexagonal/cube design. (It’s like a cooler version of the level from Q*bert.) It’s a big one, so there is a bit of weight to it. It can fit in my jean pockets with no issues, but I do recommend putting it in a backpack or purse. There’s also a display to let you know how much juice is left, with 100 being the maximum. Simply press the button on the side to activate the display.

The 3-headed adapter cable provided is simply wonderful since it helps remove cable clutter. If you have a lot of devices that require different types of cables for charging, the cable is very helpful. I use it to charge my phone and the COAL portable charger with the USB-C head and the PS4 controller with the micro USB head. The third is the Lightning head for newer iPads and iPhones. One gripe I do have is that if you’re charging with the USB-C or Lightning head, it can easily detach if you’re not careful. My paranoid side checks the cable from time to time to make sure that the head is still attached.

COAL also has a 48 Watt AC Wall Charger available (see photos above). It comes with two ports, one for Apple devices and the bottom, orange one for new Android devices. It’s a bit on the bulky side, but it’s not needed if you already have a fast-charging adapter. I mainly use the Samsung adapter that was included in my Samsung Galaxy S9+ since it’s smaller and doesn’t hog the power outlets.

If you’re in need of a portable charger/power bank that can charge fast with a lot of power, you can’t go wrong with the COAL Catalyst portable charger. You can purchase it with the 3-headed adapter cable on Amazon.

Rating: 4.5/5 Atoms
