Sex Education Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

In the previous episode of Netflix’s Sex Education, Jackson and Maeve officially became a couple. During Sex Education season 1 episode 5, Eric celebrated his birthday while Otis and Maeve investigated who sent a picture of a vagina to everyone at school.

Roll Up the Sleeves

Ruby went to Maeve for help. Every Moordale student received a photo of her vagina. The sender threatened to show whose it was if Ruby didn’t apologize during school assembly the next day. Maeve offered to find the perpetrator for free, despite how mean Ruby was.

Maeve and Otis started with Tom Baker, the original recipient of the photo. When Otis saw him throw his phone into the river, he confronted Tom, who admitted to sending it to Kyle. Next, they went to Aimee’s study group. Kyle was stoned and asking for orange juice. Maeve and Otis went to the store, where Ola worked. After drinking it, Kyle said he didn’t send the photo to anyone. Maeve realized that the perpetrator was a girl.

Olivia was the only person who knew Ruby’s passcode. She confessed she sent it because she felt Ruby was overly critical of her. Olivia apologized to Ruby, but Ruby told Olivia she hated her. When the headmaster was about to lecture the school about the photo at assembly, many of the girls and a few of the boys of the student body stood up claiming it was their vagina, Spartacus style.

Tradition

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

It was Eric’s birthday, and Otis surprised him with tickets to see Hedwig and the Angry Inch in town. It was a tradition for them to dress up like Hedwig and see the movie. They would take the early bus together into town.

Unfortunately, because of the investigation, Otis missed the bus that Eric was on. He bailed on Eric completely and called to promise to make it up to him. Eric was going to go home on the next bus, but someone stole his jacket with his phone and wallet. He walked back in the Hedwig outfit, and a guy assaulted him at the bus stop.

Eric called Jean to pick him up. When Otis got home, he hadn’t noticed Eric’s face and immediately told him about a moment he had with Maeve. Eric claimed that Otis was self-centered, and Otis accused Eric of being angry that he wasn’t the center of attention. Eric went home, and though his father was concerned, he told Eric he needed to toughen up.

Not a Shiny Person

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

Jackson invited Maeve to his house to meet his parents. Maeve reluctantly agreed and dressed more conservatively. At dinner with Jackson and his two mothers, Maeve lied about her parents. She left the house after excusing herself for the bathroom.

After leaving Aimee’s, she went back to Jackson’s to apologize. Maeve took him to her trailer. She explained that her mother is a drug addict and her father left a long time ago. Jackson admitted his family was not as perfect as they seemed. He’d been on anti-anxiety medication for years, and his parents fought all the time.
