AGC Studios greenlights Neil Burger’s sci-fi film Voyagers

Filmmaker Neil Burger, who’s helmed such sci-fi films as Limitless and Divergent is headed to space. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director’s latest project, the YA sci-fi feature Voyagers, has been greenlit by AGC Studios.

The film, which Burger also wrote, follows a group of 30 kids who are sent on a generation-spanning mission to a distant planet to help both colonize and populate it. However, after the lone adult who is along for the ride to supervise the young colonizers dies mysteriously, the kids quickly start to descend into warring tribal factions on an uncharted planet. It’s basically Lord of the Flies, but in space.

AGC Studios will finance the project, as well as produce it alongside Basil Iwanyk and Brendon Boyea via Thunder Road Films and Burger’s Nota Bene Productions banner. Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker) will serve as executive producer.

Casting for the film is currently underway, with production looking to start in the Spring. The plan is to introduce the project to the European Film Market in Berlin in February, which is all the rage this time of year.

Burger’s latest film, the slice-of-life dramedy The Upside starring Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman, is currently in theaters.
