Tidelands Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Tidelands is a new show on Netflix that follows a group of mer-people whose society is blown open by a murder. What does this first installment of the series have in store? Let’s find out as we recap Tidelands season 1 episode 1 ‘Home!’

Freedom

A man was sailing in the open water looking for a drug drop location when he was attacked by a mermaid who quickly killed him. Meanwhile, a woman, Calliope, was released from prison after a ten year sentence. Elsewhere in Algeria, a pair of women met and exchanged information on a suspected mermaid attack. The police had found the boat and body of the sailor and they quickly called an expert, Augie, to consult on the case. Calliope was driven back to Orphelin Bay, and she observed the many changes that had taken place over the last decade. Augie reached out to the local branch of fisherman to learn about the murder victim. Calliope returned to her childhood home and was surprised to find her brother, Augie, waiting for her.

Accusations

Calliope was angry that she had not been told that her father had died, and that she was being denied her inheritance. However, Augie ignored her complaints and went to further investigate the murdered fisherman. Augie found the local outpost of the Tidelanders (what the show calls mer-people). He immediately accused the leader, Adrielle, of committing the murder, but her boyfriend denied it. Calliope went to her lawyer and learned that her mother had been entrusted with Calliope’s inheritance and he had spent it on purchasing a local bar. She accused her mother of forcing her to light the fire that had gotten her sent to prison. Meanwhile, Adrielle returned to her community and informed them of the newest deals she had struck with leaders from around the area. Adrielle launched a big celebration for her return, but she quickly departed it and returned to her house. She was told about the murder and the role her people had played in it.

Leadership

Adrielle had brought a piece of wood home from her trip and she placed it in a drawer with the many other specials pieces of wood she had collected during her adventures. Back at the bar, Calliope left, which angered a man who had been hitting on her and he followed her out of the bar. Calliope fought off the man and Cal, an old friend and police officer, came to comfort her, but was quickly sent away. Later, Augie was visited by his mother, and she warned him to avoid Calliope. When she left, Adrielle appeared and began to fight with Augie, the encounter quickly turned from confrontational to sexual. Calliope went to her father’s boat and found Augie’s hidden stash of money. Augie offered her the money, but Calliope wanted to be let in on the business that Augie was running. He agreed and took her on that night’s excursion. The pair received their shipment of drugs from the Tidelanders. While showering, Calliope was kidnapped and taken out to the ocean to drown. Luckily, Calliope was able to breathe underwater.
