Netflix set to remake Jimmy Stewart’s Harvey

Netflix and writers J. David Stem (Shrek 2) and David N. Weiss (The Smurfs franchise) are planning to adapt a remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart dramedy Harvey, Deadline has confirmed.

Harvey was originally a Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by Mary Chase before it was adapted into a feature film centering on a man named Elwood P. Dowd who has a maybe-not-so-imaginary 6-foot rabbit named Harvey. The story has made its way to the small screen five times over the years, but multiple attempts to remake it for the big screen have not been successful.

Previously, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg were in talks to develop a remake under Fox/DreamWorks but the project obviously never came to fruition. Prior to that, producer Don Gregory acquired the rights to Harvey in 1996, eventually selling them to Miramax before the rights lapsed and Fox snatched them up.

The original Harvey film is currently streaming on Netflix. Fábrica de Cine (The Irishman) will produce the remake.
