Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen creators on Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’s success

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is the number one film at the box office this weekend, bringing in $35.4 million during its opening weekend. The film now has the title of highest opening for an animated feature in the month of December, beating out Illumination Studios’ Sing. Many are already calling the film the best Spider-Man movie and the best comic book film of all time.

Of course, none of this would be possible if it were not for the artists and writers who first brought these characters to life on the pages of a comic book. Recently, Miles Morales creator Brian Michael Bendis (can you spot his Easter egg in the film?) and Spider-Gwen co-creator Jason Latour talked about seeing their characters in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the reaction it has received from fans.

Latour called watching the film in theaters an “out-of-body experience, very humbling” and is a highlight of his life. “Gwen is one of the closest [characters] to me personality-wise. I couldn’t help but filter her problems through my own life.”

“These guys (Phil Lord and Chris Miller) and everyone that worked with them were just the best,” Latour added. “I went up to Sony Animation in L.A. after Comic-Con this summer and screened the film before it was done. Even at about 60 percent finished — and what was there was so close to great already — it was hard to believe it could survive the concerns of Hollywood and come out even better. I gave them five or six actionable notes, mostly on Gwen’s character and her relationships, and a few dumb jokes and insights into Spider-Ham (who we all bonded pretty deeply over). And man, I was so thrilled and surprised to see my input was not only received but that a lot of it was actually incorporated into the movie. It’s just such a rare thing to be asked into the process— let alone listened to.”

Bendis recently tweeted out that he would like for everyone to stop messaging him about the “Jordan 1 “Origin-Story.”

“To my friends and family, I’m not turtle from entourage, I can’t get you shoes. Stop asking :)”

Aside from shoe request, Bendis has been pretty active on Twitter this week interacting and responding to fans feedback from the movie.

“So many of you have championed Miles Morales since the day we introduced him. You spread the word and lifted him, and us, up. and here we are! I hope each of you takes a moment to enjoy your part in this.

I love you all! Have fun. I’ll be sharing some thoughts at the end of the weekend. (brace yourselves, it’s going to get mushy.”

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is currently in theaters everywhere.
